Burma protest today in London, Cardiff..everywhere

People in Britain have been protesting outside Total garages and offices all week with demos in places like Bradford, Oxford, and London - now it's our turn!

Protest at the Total Garage, Cathedral Road, Cardiff, 11am Saturday 6th October.
Assemble: 10.30am outside Glamorgan Staff Club, Westgate Street to march on the garage.

As the media's attention span wanes, and a spectacle-weary public grows tired of seeing South East Asians getting battered and shot on primetime TV, a full-scale state and military backlash against Burma's people is underway. Demonstrators are being routinely rounded up, put in prison, and quite probably tortured, and more monks are being murdered and beaten every day.

Let's target the companies that prop up Burma's murderous military dictatorship and let them know that they can't get away with supporting despots with impunity.

Bring banners, placards, and whatever else you expect to find - wear saffron or dark red if you want to.

From the ever impressive Indy media here

Statement of support from Jean Lambert, Green Party MEP for London:

When the monks and protestors took to the streets of Burma to rise up against their governing oppressive regime my immediate thoughts were oftheir courage. That all those people were prepared to risk their livesfurther highlighted their desperation, having lived for too many years underan appalling regime with neither respect for human rights nor human dignity. It is essential that we stand strong behind those brave citizens. They need our support and the pressure that we can exert together on the international community. MEPs recently voted in the European Parliament to increase the level of sanctions on Burma, but the EU has been depressingly slow to act to put a stop to the lucrative export of gems, fossil fuels and timber, which isfunding the military force. Along with economic sanctions we can also pressure our national Governments to ensure multinational companies, like Total, stop doing business in Burma. It is time that the whole of the international community, including China and India, took responsibility for the fact that their trade funds Burma's military budget and enables the Junta to stay in power. As we have demanded in the European Parliament, the UN Security Council must condemn the Burmese Government and toughen sanctions against their military regime. You have my full support for your campaign. I hope that your protest today will take us one step closer to freeing the people of Burma from fearful oppression, so that they can soon live in peace.
