Capitalism in crisis: sell, sell, sell

Biggest fall for 20 years on the markets today....

Capitalism moves through a cycle of growth and crisis.

Those who argue a crash will lead to a new economic system may be naive.

However those who argue that bubbles never burst, are even more naive.

This crisis is simple in origin....bankers fucked up, selling mortgages and other forms of debt to those who could not afford them, the toxic debt was repackaged and a whole host of esoteric financial instruments have taken centre stage.

The banks no longer trust each other so are unwilling to lend to each other....all the dogmas of monetary policy, orthodox or social credit 'radical' mean nothing.....if the banks don't trust each other they are reluctent to lend and a 'liquidity' crisis is the result.

For example, while the monetary policy committee of the Bank of England manage the UK economy, when they cut interest rates the banks are less likely to pass the cut on, because they fear bad debt.

In the UK we are frighteningly exposed, personal debt is huge so when the banks get tough millions of us are going to feel the pain...our economy is over dependent on the City of London thus two generations of supply side economics, deregulation, etc from Thatcher, Major, Blair and Brown has allowed the city to lend in ways which are astonishingly reckless.

Thatcher allowed 'mutuals' to move from building societies to become banks, she also made the UK economy centrally linked to the housing market (this is in free fall as I write), the big bank freed up the city, capital controls were abolished, etc, etc, etc....everyone else has continued with these policies.

Gordon Brown cannot be challenged by Osbourne or Vince Cable because all three have the same essential policy framework

So we need as always to look towards a stable post-capitalist society...capitalism is always unstable, the lower the regulation the higher the risk but the higher the short term profit.

The key phrase is economic democracy, socialism if you like....putting people through workers control, mutuals, etc in charge.

Capitalism will always be unstable...its crazy growth imperative mortgages the planet as well.

Production for need on an ecosocialist basis will not happen over night but neither capitalism not traditional forms of state control work.

This is not the final crisis of capitalism, however the growth imperative behind capitalism gives rise to a cancer, some of us are seeking a cure...others maintain we should be puff more enthusiastically on the high tar death tubes.

Open source ecosocialism is the alternative...

Bull fighting monument defaced in Venezuela

I had quite a bit of difficultly explaining to my Latin American green friends why I was meeting up with Sea Shepherd this week, 'isn't killing whales like being able to eat cows or sheep', noted one amigo who shall remain nameless.

I am not a moral philosopher and I think these things can blur around the edges however, green politics does involve a rejection of using the rest of nature for our own benefit in an unthinking manner. The rest of creation has moral status. Whales need to be conserved in my book for a start (queue abused from deep and non deep ecologists).

It would be very easy to be vegan in Venezuela, the advocados are the size of a small footballs but vegetarians are few and far between over there...difficult to be a vegetarian and live on protein from the trees over here in the UK but paradoxically there are more vegetarians in Berkshire, I suspect, than in Brazil where the nuts grow.

Obviously a more vegetarian diet makes sense ecologically and healthwise. One of the gains of the permaculture revolution in Cuba was to get people eating better stuff.

Equally the far left to some extent can understand ecology but animal liberation is pretty much off of the agenda of USFI, Morning Star, Labour left, etc as far as I know.

Anyway interested to see some anti-bull fighting sentiment in Venezuela.

This law seems to be backed by supporters of President Hugo Chavez (who does not seem to like bullfighting), and due to his victory in the last elections, is now more likely that this Bill will become an Act. This would undoubtedly put Venezuela 'up there' with Cuba, a political ally, which banned bullfighting a long time ago.

Is an article from the League against Cruel Sports about a piece of possible Ven legislation, will be interested to see if it has progressed.

I certainly by the way would not want to imply the left or Latin America condone cruelty to animals but animal issues do seem less talked about than they should...

**** There are many ULO's/DPO's and Trade Unions in this Country like to promote DAN, this is the same for some charities, public bodies and Government departments too, who say that they have 'consulted'with DAN, but they seem to forget that 'promoting DAN and actually 'consultation' are too totally different things.... They are an 'ocean-apart'.... In my experiences of being involved in DAN now since 1995, I have seen loads of 'token' gestures by all the above mentioned to actually inclusion of the 'real' Disabled Peoples 'voices'... There is a lot of pretence and some of these people within the above mentioned would make great 'window dressors' at Harrods.

DAN is fed-up of all this 'spin' and will continue to fight for basic human right and civil liberities within DAN's FreeOurPeople campaign.... DAN, rightly, are very causious who they choose and say are ''Our' allies. DPO's/ULO's and others need to understand what it means to become an ally of the 'grassroots' Disabled Peoples' Direct Action Network (DAN).

As I said above there is a difference between 'promoting' and 'consultation' with DAN.

There are too many Charities and ULO's who out-there you are still falsely claming to respresent 'grassroots' Disabled People's 'voices'. DAN knows who you are... 'We' have you under DAN surveillance... You are still on the DAN radar, so watch out DAN is about!!!

DAN is 'not-dead', as some people are made to believe, with given-out the false propaganda.... DAN is 'Alive-and-Kicking'... So watch this space... If you and/your DPO's/ULO's and 'real-allies' want to join a network of other Disabled People to 'FreeOurPeople' then you'll be more than welcome.

'Nothing About Us, Without Us'.

'I will keep fighting', says Hugo Blanco

This has been keeping me very busy over the last couple of days, because of the public protest Hugo has been freed but the struggle against enclosure, stealing land by elites goes on every single day in a great many countries…this is Hugo’s statement, translated by his son Oscar…the photo is from the 1960s! He certainly continues to fight the lucha...

MY ARREST
First of all, I want to express my gratitude to all individuals and institutions that, once they heard about my arrest, demanded my liberty. Your support was very important. I want to specially thank our Canadian friends, whose support has made it possible for Lucha Indigena still to be published. A special thank also to Conacami, our friends in the indigenous and social struggle in Peru, and also to Wilbert Rozas, the mayor who set up the first local government governed by the indigenous communities, who travelled to Paruro as soon as he heard the news. Thanks to all this solidarity my liberation was quick…for now.
My relation to this case goes back to my childhood in Huanoquite, Paruro, Cusco, when I got the news that the landowner Bartolomé Paz had let the buttocks of an indigenous farmer be branded with hot iron, with his initials: BP. Of course Mr. Paz was not arrested, that was not possible since he was a respected man. That act probably decided the purpose of my life.
Now his son, Rosendo Paz, heir of the hacienda, takes neighbouring land in Markhura, belonging to the indigenous community of Tantarcalla. He has even set up a paddock specifically for stolen cattle, something that was reported by the owner.
The community has documents proving their ownership. In 2006 the members of the community came to the Farmers’ Federation of Cusco, of which they are members, bringing their deeds, to ask for the presence of a representative from the federation at the ceremony, where the land was to be distributed amongst the members in order to be used. I was assigned this task by the federation. I fulfilled the task, which I immediately informed the local police station about. They did not object in any way or form.
At a later date, Rosendo Paz ordered the police in Huanoquite to go and take the members of the community away, an order that was immediately executed. Since the farmers had the audacity to resist the attack, they were beaten and taken to the village and then to the city of Cusco. This included women with crying children. I was not present when these acts took place, but I was called to give a statement. Obviously, those who were classified as criminals were not the aggressors, but the victims of the aggressions.
When I was arrested and was told that I was accused of “Violence and Resistance to Authority”, I thought that it was in relation to this act, at which I was not present. I was wrong, the judge had the good will to tell me. The crime of “Violence and Resistance to Authority” was committed by assisting to the ceremony of the land distribution, during which there was no violence at all and no state representative was present.
I understand. We are in the country in which the Parliament, abdicating from their duty, authorised the cabinet to legislate in their place, against “Organised Crime”. Alan García used this authorisation to legislate against claims by organised people, penalising protest.
The victims of this word manipulation are the hundreds of people all around Peru who have been arrested and sentenced for claiming their rights. These are comrades who have the misfortune not to be well known, for which nobody raises their voice to protest on their behalf. Fortunately I did get the support necessary to be released quickly. I call on all the voices of solidarity, which with their swift action brought me out of prison, to protect together all the victims of the penalisation of protest. It seems like Conacami have already started a campaign. Let us take part in that campaign. I will keep the addresses of all those who with their voices of solidarity set me free, in order to invite you to take part in the defence of other victims of repression.
As of my case, it is not finished. The system tends to leave the sword of Damocles just above the heads of those who protest, with the threat that if they do not change their attitude and close their mouths, the sword will fall.
The judge gave me an ambiguous document, in which I am called to attend on the 21 November. It is ambiguous because it is unclear whether I may be arrested again if I do not attend. In this way the interpretation is up to the repression and the political needs of the regime.
This is the kind of documents they tend to give out. They mean: “If you keep quiet nothing will happen, but if you keep on protesting you will be incarcerated.
How can they explain my arrest for an event that took place over two years ago, without asking me to give a statement in all that time, when I was called, attended and gave a statement for a later event?
The explanation is that my local activities were not bothering them much back then. Now on the other hand, when all the countryside is moving because of the fierce attacks on indigenous communities, organisations from around the country invite me to talk about the attack and to coordinate the defence, the prime minister calls me old-fashioned and my activities are bothering them.
I promise to keep fighting until my last breath against the oppression against our peoples, which began five centuries ago.

Hugo Blanco out of jail thanks to you

Hugo has been released after a huge international campaign...will bring you more when we have translated his statement 'My detention'.

So thanks to everyone....land remains the big issue and clearly there are powerful people in Peru who want to silence the campesinos and the indigenous.

many many thanks to all of you who emailed and faxed the Peruvian authorities.

Here is his statement for those of you who speak Spanish...

Gracias a esa solidaridad fui rápidamente liberado ….temporalmente.

Free Hugo Blanco

To all defenders of Human Rights

This morning, Hugo Blanco, ex peasant-leader and ever-present social activist, was arrested on orders of the court of Paruro, and taken to a cell in the court of Cusco. According to Peruvian law, senior citizens over the age of 70 should not be incarcerated. Mr Blanco is 73 years old and has previously suffered brain haemorrhage.

The background is an illegal occupation of land belonging to the indigenous community of Huanoquite – Paruro – Cusco – Peru, by the son of an ex-landowner. 50 years ago the landowner Paz was famous for branding his farmers with the same burning stick that he used to brand his animals. Hugo Blanco lead the land struggle that resulted in the farmers themselves gaining ownership of the land. It is this same land that his son is now illegally occupying.

The police have taken the side of the landowner against the community, and have accused the farmers and Hugo Blanco of ‘Resistance to authority’. They could not accuse the farmers of land occupation, since they actually hold the deeds for the land. In this accusation, they included Mr Blanco for having supported the community on previous occasions, despite the fact that he was not even there on the day the farmers decided to take back the land that is legally theirs.

Since he was not notified that he was accused of ‘Resistance to authority’, he did not present himself to give a statement. Therefore the judge ordered his arrest. Tomorrow he will be taken to Paruro to give his statement.

I call on all political organisations, the media and defenders of Human Rights, to show solidarity and spread this news.

Let us hope that this case will be solved quickly, and that it will serve to expose the systematic abuses against the indigenous, in this community as well as in many others, who are the legitimate owners of the land, but have been oppressed for centuries. Let us also show the authorities that the national and international solidarity are aware of the increasing tendencies to criminalize social struggle and social activists in Peru.

Please send protest letters to the Peruvian embassy as well as releasing statements. Please also send a copy of all letters to Lucha Indigena, the newspaper edited by Hugo Blanco, and to myself, in order to keep a record of the British solidarity.

Urgent Appeal: Hugo Blanco indigenous leader arrested in Peru

Sorry this in Spanish, will get a translation later...my friend Hugo Blanco has been arrested in Peru, please spread the word to get him freed!
