Tuesday 13th June 2006 7.30pm £FREE

'Economics after Climate Change and Peak Oil'

‘…Economics as if people mattered’

at Terraces Bar & Grill, Marine Parade (next to Sea Life Centre), Brighton

Speakers:
Dr Derek Wall, author of ‘Babylon & Beyond’ and lecturer at Goldsmiths College
Miriam Kennett - Director, Green Economics Institute – www.greeneconomics.org.uk and editor of The International Journal of Green Economics.

‘I don’t believe that a man in a business suit is the pinnacle of human evolution’
- Miriam Kennett

Attempting to apply the brakes to the capitalist juggernaut, approaching the cliff edge of climate catastrophe, Kennett & Wall deconstruct globalisation and its impact on people and planet.

Against the background of war and poverty, of the rampant march towards ever greater growth, profit and productivity, of deforestation and species loss, of outsourcing and privatisation, the erosion of liberties and working conditions, of rising seas and disease, we will look at how sustainable society can be built.

Greenspeak is a free monthly event and starts at 7.30pm in the lower level at Terraces Bar & Grill, Marine Parade, Kemp Town (close to the Sea Life Centre). It is a sociable non-smoking evening with food and drinks available.

'Conventional economics based on addictive consumerism and exploitation of people and planet has created chaos on planet Earth’ said Dr Wall. ‘Green economics is about meeting need without greed, of harnessing human creativity without wrecking nature. I will be discussing what's wrong with old fashioned economics and how in practical terms the Green movement can create something better'.

Greenspeak is organised in association with the Brighton & Hove Green Party with the aim of encouraging debate and inspiring change. Speakers give their time freely and the event is put together by volunteers; although we ask for donations on the night to help cover costs.

Derek Wall and Miriam Kennett are both authors of several books and papers. Miriam was a main speaker at the World Council of Business and Sustainable Development in Geneva. Derek is associate editor of Red Pepper. The Green Economics Institute has made or is scheduled to make presentations to the British, Maltese, New Zealand, Australian and Scottish Parliaments. Both have represented the Green Party in elections.

Meanwhile, July’s Greenspeak has been moved to the first Tuesday, 4th July: ‘Spade to Spoon: Localising Our Food System’, featuring Claire Devereux of Brighton & Hove Food Partnership, Miles Denyer of Hankham Organics & Erica Adler, Cookery Development Worker, Brighton and Hove City Primary Care Trust.

You may also want to check out the excellent Cafe Scientifique, also at Terraces Bar & Grill, 3rd Tuesday of every month. June 20th: "From Nerves to Body and Back Again - The Neuro-emotional Basis of Modern Ailments" featuring Dr Nick Read, contemplating that 50% of visits to doctors are for illnesses that have no obvious physical cause and cannot be cured - www.cafe-scientifique-brighton.org.uk
