Climate Change March 8th December

15.11.7

Greens in Brighton and Hove will join forces with people allover the planet on December 8th when they take part in the Campaign Against Climate Change march through Central London. The march is timed to coincide with the UN Climate Talks in Bali.

The march will assemble at midday at Millbank and march to the American Embassy in Grosvenor Square where Caroline Lucas, MEP and the Green candidate for Brighton Pavilion at the General Elections will address the march.

“Climate change,” stated Phelim Mac Cafferty “is the biggest threat to our planet and everything on it. It is clear to all that not only is the climate changing, but becoming increasingly volatile and violent in how it changes. In order to sustain life for human beings on earth, our planet's animals and fragile eco-systems, we need urgent action now from the world’s leaders.

"The re-drafted Climate Change Bill which set the target of reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 60% by 2050 is criminally irresponsible in the context of the UK's international commitments. The UK is committed through the United Nations and the European Union to limiting average global temperature increases to no more than 2 degrees - as scientists say anything higher will have colossally bad consequences.

“If the devastation from peak oil- the point at which the maximum global petroleum production rate is reached- is to be at all curtailed, we need to work hard on solutions. The price of oil will soon peak at over $100 a barrel (1), which gives some suggestion as to what is happening with its’ supply. When you think about what oil, petrol, gas and diesel are used for whether that’s heating our houses, making products or in transport, we face a colossal task in terms of pushing for clean alternatives which won’t cripple the environment.

“We have possibly between one and 2 decades to come up with solutions to drastically reduce our carbon emissions and use less energy too, not just find different forms. Our current overuse of energy is destroying this planet's life support.

“This march will be a chance for us to call on Brown and governments here and allover the world to get moving- fast!- on climate change. Come and join us!”
