Friends of the Earth thrown out of climate conference for defending the Earth

Friends of the Earth have condemned carbon trading, I suspect this is the reason for the ban!

Hi Derek,

The Guardian and Telegraph have reported this morning that Friends of the Earth International and several other environmental groups have been banned from entering the Bella Centre in Copenhagen, where official climate negotiations are taking place (http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2009/dec/16/friends-of-the-earth-barred-bella-centre). Delegates from FoEI turned up this morning to find that their passes had been barred without their knowledge.

UN security has now cordoned off FoEI representatives outside the Bella Centre and is refusing to let international press speak to members and staff of the green group.

It has happened in a week where the UNFCCC have been clamping down on NGO and civil society access to the climate talks. Yvo de Boer, Executive Secretary of the UNFCCC, told FoEI that the ban was for ‘security’ reasons’ and that he was concerned the group would take part in a protest this afternoon.

If you’re interested in this story, we have an action up on our website at http://www.foe.co.uk/campaigns/climate/press_for_change/friends_earth_banned_22338.html where you can email Yvo de Boer, Executive Secretary of the UNFCCC, to tell him to lift this ridiculous ban.
