20 January, 6.00-7.30, Lecture Theatre T0.03, MMU John Dalton Building, Oxford Road (opposite the BBC), Joel Kovel, ‘Psychoanalytic Passages’ (Joel Kovel describes this talk as ‘a narrative of psychoanalysis in my life and my life in psychoanalysis: what got me into it; what got me out of it; where does it lead?’ Joel trained as a psychiatrist and psychoanalyst and was author of a number of key texts on the intersection between psychoanalysis and Marxism - including ‘A Complete Guide to Therapy from Psychology to Behavior Modification’ (1977), ‘Against the State of Nuclear Terror’ (1986) and ‘White Racism: A Psychohistory’ (1988) - before moving into full-time political activity.) This lecture is organised by QRSCT jointly with Manchester Psychoanalytic Matrix, the RIHSC Critical Community and Disability Studies Research Group and with financial support from the Education and the MMU Social Research Institute. 21 January, 1.00-2.00, Conference Room 1, MMU Student Union, Oxford Road, Manchester, Joel Kovel will talk about academic freedom organised by MMU Action Palestine at the Student Union and connected to publication of his book ‘Overcoming Zionism: Creating a Single Democratic State in Israel/Palestine’ (2007) and related termination of contract from Bard College in New York State. 21 January, 4.00-5.30, Room OB101, MMU Elizabeth Gaskell Campus, Hathersage Road, Joel Kovel, ‘Ecological Marxism’ (Joel Kovel will present a theoretical examination of questions that he has been working on as a scholar and activist. Joel was co-author of the ‘Ecosocialist manifesto’, is currently editor of the journal ‘Capitalism Nature Socialism’ and is author of the book ‘The Enemy of Nature: The End of Capitalism or the End of the World?’ (2007). This lecture is organised by QRSCT with financial support from the MMU Research Institute for Health and Social Change. Note this meeting is on THURSDAY afternoon.
